Before the development of modern communication systems, the most efficient means of travel was by sea.  Tiree, the westernmost of the Inner Hebridean islands, was on the main trade routes linking Ireland, the Isle of Man, Orkney, Shetland, Norway and the Scottish mainland.  Christianity came to Tiree in the 6th century with Irish Christian travellers and missionaries.  This monograph charts the evolution and progress of religion in the island, and is the fulfilment of a promise made by Bob Higham in a leaflet entitled ‘Columba and Tiree’ that was produced over 20 years ago, when he served as parish minister.
